Frequently Asked Questions about Massage Therapy

Must I be completely undressed?
Massage Therapy techniques are best performed with the client completely undressed; however, it is your decision as to what you want to wear. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly and professionally draped during the entire session. Thai Yoga Massage is done with the client fully clothed.
Are there different kinds of massage and bodywork?
I utilize numerous types of massage therapy in each session; different techniques utilize different strokes, including gliding strokes, rocking, mobilizations and stretches, posture and ergonomics education, focused pressure to specific points, and more. We can discuss which methods may be most appropriate for you.
What should I do during the massage session?
Feel free to communicate any questions about the technique or the upcoming session. While the massage is in progress, make yourself comfortable. I may gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the massage (such as resisting a stretch or raising your leg). Most just close their eyes relax, communicating if/when they need more or less pressure, another blanket, or anything else relevant to the session--some enjoy talking about their week or current issues, which is also totably acceptable. If you have any questions regarding the session or about the particular technique you are receiving, feel free to ask.

 

How will I feel after the massage  session?
My goal is for you to feel very relaxed. Some experience relief from long-term aches and pains from tension/repetitive activities. After an initial period of feeling slowed down or lightheaded, most experience increased energy, awareness, and productivity which may last for days.  I recommended you drink water before and after for your massage.

 

What are the benefits of massage and bodywork?
Massage Therapy releases chronic muscule tension and pain,  increases flexibility, may help improve posture, reduces physical fatigue and stress, promotes faster healing of physical stress, and lowers blood pressure. Massage is also known to promote sleep, improve our concentration, reduce feelings of anxiousness and create well-being.

 

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage inadvisable?
Yes. This reason is why it is so important that truthfully answer all questions, before your session. You should inform the Therapist of health problems or medications you are taking. If under physician's care, I advise you receive a recommendation for massage--I have forms available for you if needed. Some conditions can be worsened by Massage.  Some conditions only need accomodations or adjustments for the massage to be affective.
Will I be covered during the session?
I emply professional and legal draping protocols at all times--to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.

 

What parts of my body will be massaged?
A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders.  Therapeutic Massages may focus only on a specific area or two.  Discuss any specific needs/wants before your session.  If you decide mid-massage you'd prefer more or less work on a paticular area, feel free to communicate that to me.

 

What will the massage  feel like?
In a general Therapeutic Massage, your session may start with compression or rocking to help calm your nervous system and muscle tension. As you relax and I gain a perspective of your muscle tissue, the pressure will gradually be increased to work specific areas and relieve muscular tension.  I use high-quality, Therapeutic Massage cream to prevent excessive friction on the skin. I also may emply a technique that requires no cream or oil.  You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage is most effective when your body is not resisting.
